How is the New Year’s Resolution holding up? Most people have abandoned them by the time January comes to an end. If you find yourself in this group, ask yourself why. Was your resolution to give up something; soda, sweets, cigarettes? Was it to improve something; your health, your weight, your finances, your relationships? No matter what the goal, if you were unable to follow through, it’s because of one or more of the following reasons:
You Must Find Your "Why"
You have to find the one reason that will make you excited to face the day, the one thing that keeps you going even when it’s difficult. Create a vision that moves you to do things you’ve never done before. Once you have a “Why”, the “How” becomes a lot easier and more enjoyable.
- Do you clearly know why you're searching for success in your chosen endeavor? Is it crystal clear? Does it propel you forward?
- Does Your “Why” help you to overcome your fears and doubt's, your tendency to procrastinate?
You Must Have A Plan!
Review your goals. Did you set smart goals?
S – Specific
M – Measurable
A – Attainable
R – Realistic
T – Time Sensitive
- Did you write them down?
- Did you schedule them on your calendar?
You Must Be Held Accountable!
There are several levels of accountability:
Self accountability –
Setting written goals
Weighing yourself
Measuring body composition
Taking body (circumference) measurements
Tracking results on a weekly progress chart
Taking photographs
Creating menu plans or tracking nutritional intake in a
Journal
Creating workout schedules and tracking training performance in a journal
Accountability Partner – Did you share your goals and commitments with someone else that will keep you accountable? This is where a coach or trainer is beneficial.
Accountability Group – Support Groups or Accountability Partners
Accountability increases as you tell more people about your commitment.
Public Accountability – Some people go as far as posting their goals on YouTube, twitter or facebook. This approach is definitely not for everyone, but for some, the thought of failing in front of the world, is not an option. It is the one thing that will seal the deal for their success.
If you are one of those that has abandoned your resolutions, use these tips to get you back on track. It is never too late to start again!
Wishing You Great Health,
Heather Gardiner
